At the turn of the century, Henry Goodman immigrated to the United States from the town of Gritsev in the Ukraine. With a single pushcart, he and his sons began selling rhinestone-studded hair combs on New York's city streets. And in 1907, Goody was founded.
And in 1980, H. Goodman & Sons officially became known as Goody Products Inc, when it became a publicly held corporation.
Henry Goodman's son, Abraham, who was one of the co-founders, financed his college education at New York University through this pushcart business. After earning a degree in accounting, Abraham continued to build the company throughout his life, including serving as president for more than 50 years. In 1977, Abraham Goodman retired as chairman and president of Goody Products. And upon his death in 1981 at the age of 98, a week-long memorial tribute was held at Goody Products in his honor.
Henry Goodman's family business quickly grew beyond their single pushcart. In fact, by 1921, the ever-expanding product line was being sold throughout the Northeast and Midwest under the name H. Goodman & Sons. Their products achieved national distribution shortly afterward, selling in most national variety stores by the 1920's - including SS Kreege Company, now Kmart. The company prospered and grew in tandem with the growth of shopping centers, discount stores, and full-service drug and food chains.
In 1993, Goody Products was acquired by the Newell Company, a diversified Illinois-based manufacturing and marketing company which reported $2.1 billion in sales during 1994. Since that time, Goody has strengthened its position as the leader in the fashion and grooming hair accessory market.
From a family pushcart business to the world's largest manufacturer of quality brushes, combs and fashion hair accessories, Goody Products draws upon nearly a century of experience to move the company forward into the 21st century and beyond.
